Pops, with John Jr. watching, putts for birdie on the 18th green at Big Canoe Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004.

My grandfather, my father’s father, would’ve turned 101 years old today.

His passing the day before my wife and I wed in June 2006 left an indelible mark on my memory, but John Lee Sr.’s legacy will always be about lessons, longevity and love.

Losing both his parents as a young child, working through the Great Depression and managing an entire city were just a few of the challenges my grandfather met in his very unique and fruitful life. “Better to be lucky than good any day,” he’d tell folks in his humble and tender way.

So here’s to you, Pops, on your birthday! Oh, and give Mimi a big hug for us up there.

Love that photo! Remember it well. We were sitting up on the balcony stirring up controversy!
