STAT OF THE WEEK: 1 cent vs. $18 billion, etc.

24 Jul

At the end of the month, Georgians will vote on T-SPLOST, the 1% transportation local option sales tax.

An Atlanta Regional Commission study on the measure projects that if passed:

• There will be an $18 billion increase in the region’s personal income by 2040

• There will be $9.2 billion in travel-time savings in that timeframe

•  The air quality improvement will be the equivalent of taking 72,000 cars off the roads daily

• There will be a 24% average decrease in future travel delays

• and a 4-1 return on investment by 2040

There’s always the concern about the government’s inefficient use of taxpayer funds, but even if the effect of the tax and resulting transportation projects is half of the ARC’s estimates above, isn’t it worth a try?
